Groton LocalOrganization Address: Description of organization: We are a non-profit that works on many initiatives to make our community more sustainable. We formed one year ago from a book group which had been reading about the end of cheap fossil fuels (that we all have come to depend on) and climate changes directly related to the use of these fuels. We decided we wanted to work to make our community less dependent on fossil fuels by helping to educate residents about saving energy and at the same time work to support a healthy and vibrant local economy so we wouldn't have to travel as far to get what we need. Volunteer opportunities: Energy/Green Building: We have monthly seminars on subjects such as Solar Hot Water, Burning Wood for Heat, Energy Efficient Insulating, Green Building, and Building a Solar Dehydrator and Oven. We have a program to help Seniors switch to efficient CFL light bulbs. We also work with the Garden Group to look into building cold frames, hoop houses and possibly a solar greenhouse. Our seminars are video taped for viewing on the local cable channel and we would welcome help with the seminars, light bulb changing and building projects. Food/Agriculture: We have many seminars scheduled for the coming year relating to food such as different ways of preserving and we are looking into the possibility of starting a food coop. Our biggest endeavor is a community garden. This is our second year and we have learned a lot about organic gardening. We would welcome help as we prepare and enter our growing season. We will be giving 5 shares to Loaves and Fishes and it might be possible to have a student manage this. We would also like to work with the schools on an edible school yard project. Local Economy: We are working on ways to promote local business. You may have seen the brightly colored sunflowers on the reusable canvas bags that we designed and had made with many local businesses listed on the back. We are also looking into funding residential solar hot water projects and doing solar "raisings" (like barn raisings). All our groups, as well as our coordinating committee (open to all), meet monthly. We also have larger quarterly meetings that we strongly encourage all residents interested to attend. |
Disclaimer: The Community Service Initiative is not responsible for the students that volunteer, our only role is to provide a list of volunteering opportunities for students to view.
